Japanese Envoy calls on Environment Minister

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Hideaki Mizukoshi called on Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe on January 24.

This is the first time that the new Ambassador has met the Minister and the Secretary to discuss environmental issues after assuming his official duties in Sri Lanka.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera explained the details of the Surakimu Ganga programme that the Ministry launched to protect the environment, reduce carbon emissions, plastics and polythene and polythene and plastics in the oceans and prevent the entry of polythene and plastics into the ocean.

The Ambassador also explained Japan's efforts to conserve the environment and reduce the use of polythene and plastics. He also spoke about the successful programmes in place to recycle polythene and plastics in Japan, as well as the new technology being used in this regard.

Ambassador Hideaki Mizukoshi told the Minister that steps will be taken to reduce the use of polythene and plastics in Sri Lanka and provide technical assistance and opportunities to exchange experiences with the Government of Japan for their recycling.

He also said that a team from Sri Lanka could be sent to Japan for this purpose and that they would be given the opportunity to gain new technical knowledge and experience.

The Minister congratulated Ambassador Hideaki Mizukoshi on his appointment as the Ambassador to Sri Lanka. He also said that all the representatives of the Government of Japan who had previously served as Ambassadors to Sri Lanka had maintained cordial relations with the Government of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan people.

“The Government of Sri Lanka will extend its full support to the new Ambassador to maintain cordial relations with the people of Sri Lanka,” the Minister said.
