Seismic Centre for Western Province to better understand regional earthquakes

Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) Chairman Anura Walpola said on Sunday that a new seismic centre will be set up in the Western Province to better understand regional earthquakes.

The Chairman said that in addition to the existing seismic gauges, a new seismometer will be installed to more closely and scientifically monitor seismic activities in the Asian region.

He was speaking at a workshop organised by the Bureau at the Getambe Oakray Hotel in Kandy on January 23 to educate the media about earthquakes and mineral resources.

“The Centre will issue early warnings regarding earthquakes and tsunamis in the Asian region and it will be built with Chinese aid,” the Chairman said.

The GSMB Chairman also said that with the establishment of the Seismic Western Centre and those in Mahakanadarawa, Hakmana, Buddhangala and Pallakele, it would be possible to obtain data covering the island expeditiously.

The GSMB receives seismic data from the Pallekele Seismological Centre automatically and it is the main data collection centre in Sri Lanka.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Engineer Sajjana de Silva, GSMB Director General Janaka Ajith Prem, Mapping and Geological Information Division Director Nalinda Silva and the Mineral Survey Division Director were present.
