Development work in Ratnapura to be expedited

Steps have been taken to expedite development work in the Ratnapura town following the recent visit of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

The Urban Development Authority has already planned to complete the development work within the next three months.

Under the proposed Ratnapura Urban Development Plan, a fully fledged bus stand in the centre of Ratnapura town will be constructed while several new vehicle parks will also be set up. New houses will be provided to resettle the people who have lost their houses and lands due to the development work. Under this plan, power and telephone cables will be properly installed in the town while old dilapidated buildings will be demolished.

Especially, the entire development plan will be implemented giving priority for the natural beauty and national heritage,” he added.

Meanwhile, a new International Gem and Jewellery Trade Centre will be constructed in Ratnapura with an investment of Rs.365 million. Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said the International Gems and Jewellery Trade Centre will provide facilities to sellers and buyers to conduct business under one roof where tourists can view and observe the stones carefully.

She further said that the Ratnapura town will be developed into a major tourist attraction in the country.
