Woman exploiting infant for money remanded

Kandy police arrested a woman who was wandering in the streets in Kandy holding an infant in her arms wanting money to buy medicines for her sick child.

The child had been sent to a doctor and it has been revealed that the child was quite healthy and was not suffering from any illness.

A doctor at the Kandy National Hospital, Attorney Palitha Bandara Subasinghe had lodged a complaint with the police and subsequently the woman had been taken into custody by the Kandy Children and Women’s Bureau.

The doctor had felt suspicious because the infant in the arms of the woman whenever seen was asleep and complained to the police requesting that an investigation be made as to whether the child had been drugged.

When the woman had been asked to provide a blood sample to confirm whether she was on drugs while breastfeeding the infant, she had not been in favour. Permission has been granted by the Kandy Additional Magistrate to obtain a blood sample of the infant about three months old and get it tested. The woman was been remanded until February14.The Additional Magistrate had ordered that the infant be sent to the Uda Peradeniya Tikiri Children’s Orphanage. Kandy SSP Chamil Ratnayake has instructed the Children and Women’s Bureau to conduct a special investigation into women who are begging for money exploiting children.
