The 17th annual general meeting of Colombo Electrical Association was held at the Grand Oriental Hotel and current President Dhammika Samarawickrama was unanimously elected as the President for the fourth time.

After the election he said that the ongoing import restrictions are having a major negative impact for the local electrical and other product manufactures. “While some raw materials are unavailable others have gone up in price due to the rupee depreciation against the US dollar. This has resulted in the losses of the competitive edge local products have over imported similar products.”

He said allowing raw material imports would be beneficial to the government as it will firstly stop imports of some of the electoral products that could be totally made in Sri Lanka. “Secondly it will ensure that the present work force engaged in the industry would not lose their jobs while it will also give a window of opportunity for new enterprises to start. We appeal to the government to come out with a practical plan to bail out our industry.”
