HNB tame Air Force to win crown 49/47

Hatton National Bank (HNB) led by Dharshika Abeywickrama made a superb team effort to record a thrilling win (49-47) over Sri Lanka Air Force to retain the champions trophy at the Dialog National Netball championship played at Digana Indoor Stadium, Kandy yesterday.

The final between HNB and Air Force made a head-to-head battle while several National players were included in both sides performed the skills. Air Force led by Dulani Erandika took an early lead by winning the first quarter 10/9, but HNB started with a slow game came with good tactics to pose a good challenge from the second quarter to get lead over the Air Force team. After the second quarter, HNB led the game with 22/19, and especially Goal Attack (GA) player Skipper Dharshika Abeywickrama made a good effort while centre court players, Dulangi Wannithilleka and Gayanjali Amarawansa, gave good support to the team with some superb passes.

However, Air Force once again made a more attacking style to close their gap to come forward during the third quarter and after the four quarters both sides finished the game with 39 all,

and the game went on to an extra quarter to get a decision. The extra quarter also saw a very close fight and finally, HNB defeated Air Force 49-47 to take the title with a grand style. Air Force Goal defender former Sri Lankan skipper Chathurangi Jayasooriya used her experience while opponent side’s defenders Malmi Hettiarachchi and Gayani Dissanayake also made a good effort. Malmi the promising player was named as Netball Queen of the Tournament.

HNB skipper Dharshika Abeywickrama was adjudged the Best Shooter while Best Centre Court Player award was won by Gayanjali Amarawansa of HNB. Chathurangi Jayasooriya the experienced Air Force player was named as Best Defender player.

Earlier HNB defeated Kurunegala DNA 45-17 while Air Force beat Army 41-36 at the semi finals. The third place game was won by the Army team led by Thisara Algama defeating Kurunegala DNA 68-44.

After laps of two years, Sri Lanka Netball Federation successfully conducted this tournament while Dialog came as the main sponsor for the third time. Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage was the chief guest while Harsha Samaranayake the senior General Manager Brand, Marketing and Media of Dialog Axiata, President of the Netball Federation Ranjani Jayakody, and Secretary Kumudini Gomes were present at the awards ceremony.
