Kabul Embassy to close for now

Foreign Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris has informed the Cabinet that the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan would be temporarily closed based on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. This decision has been taken considering the unstable political and security situation prevailing in that country.

Taliban rebels grabbed the ruling power in Afghanistan in May last year after the United States withdrew its forces from that country.

Many countries have already withdrawn their diplomatic missions from Kabul. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Kabul was set up in 2014 with two officers. One of them had died due to COVID-19 and the other officer had returned to Sri Lanka on personal leave at the time the Taliban had captured the Kabul Airport.
