Central Expressway toll yields over Rs. 2 mn in 12 hours

Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said yesterday that an income of over Rs. 2 million was received within the first 12 hours of the opening of the second phase of the Central Expressway.

A sum of Rs 2,805,100 had been paid by motorists using the expressway during the first 12 hours from noon to midnight on Sunday (16) after its opening by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday (15).

The Minister said that during the first 12 hours of toll collection, a total number of 13,583 vehicles had traversed the stretch from Mirigama to Kurunegala. No traffic accident has been reported during the 12-hour period.

Minister Fernando said that the newly opened road had been allowed free of charge to the public for 12 hours from midnight Saturday (15) to noon on Sunday (16).
