SL to hold talks with China on obtaining essential goods and services

China and Sri Lanka have agreed to review the possibility of utilizing Chinese relief assistance in order to obtain supplies of essential goods such as rice to Sri Lanka, the Government Information Department said in a press release on Friday.

The Government has said that discussions are scheduled to begin in the near future. A decision has been made at the Cabinet Meeting held on January 18 to hold a discussion with the Chinese Government to determine what essential goods and services should be obtained under Chinese assistance facilities.

The Trade Ministry and the Finance Ministry will together identify essential goods and services, to which priority should be given, and then will communicate to the Chinese Government, the release said.

There has been a long-term friendship and cooperation between China and Sri Lanka. The Chinese Government often makes extensive investments targeting development in Sri Lanka and donates various relief assistance facilities. Even as of now, a number of productive and extensive investment projects are being successfully implemented within the country based on bilateral agreement between the Governments of China and Sri Lanka. At the same time, in line with Sri Lanka’s economic management requirements, China has always provided leading investments, loans and assistance whenever needed, the press release added.
