The present Principal of Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy Sashikala Samitanganie Senadheera has the rare honour of being the Tenth Principal of the School in their 90 th Anniversary of Mahamaya Girls School on the 14 th of January,2022. She was a former outstanding Sportswoman of her alma mater, Mahamaya and with her achievements in Education as well, she was appointed the Principal of the School. The School is one of the leading Buddhist Schools in the Kandy District serving the nation for the last Ninety years.

Sashikala got Admitted to Mahamaya after a scholarship examination to the Sixth grade and started Athletics in the school in the Under 13 and 15 age groups who won the track events in 100 & 200 metre Races representing Maya House and at that time the POG of the School was Manel Weerasinghe and according to her instructions she changed her participation in Athletics and started field events. Immediately she met with success in Javelin Throw, discus throw and Shot Putt for a number of years in School as well as in District and Provincial levels. Her Contemporaries in the Athletic team were Priyanga Herath, Neranjika Dissanayake , two Outstanding Athletes in the mid eighties. Shashikala started playing Hockey with distinction under the coaching of Malcolm Perera, A talented Hockey Coach and she played as Centre half from 1984 to 1988 along with Niluka Wijekoon and Amitha Dissanayake. Ultimately she became the Captain of the School Hockey Team as well as the Kandy District Girls Hockey team in 1988 and under her captaincy Mahamaya became Kandy District Hockey Champions and furthermore she led the Kandy Schools Hockey team to victory at the All Island Schools Hockey tournament held in 1987 which beat Colombo district Schools Hockey team in the finals. Her team mates were, Nirosha Weeraratne, Niluka Wijekoon, Nadi Wijekoon, Amitha Abeyratne, and Jeewani Rambodagalle to name a few.

She entered the University of Kelaniya in 1991 and continued playing Hockey and won colours. She passed out obtaining BSc Honours with second class upper division.
