Three attached to Regional Health office remanded in connection with Rs. 100 million fraud

Two employees and another individual of the Accounts Division of the Kandy District Regional Health Office, who were arrested on suspicion of embezzling nearly Rs.100 million have been remanded till January 26 subsequent to being produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court yesterday ( January 12). These three persons were taken into custody on January 11 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The Police said that one of those individuals remanded is the husband of a woman who had been serving at the Health Director’s Office.

Investigations have revealed that one of the two women, who worked as Development Officers in the Accounts Division, had credited the fraudulently obtained money to her husband’s account. The Secretary to the Central Provincial Ministry of Health had taken steps to suspend the two employees suspected of being involved in the financial fraud, which came to light about a month ago. It was revealed that the two female employees had credited money to several bank accounts set up in other people’s names over a period of about three years, while paying salaries to health staff, including doctors through the District Health Services Director’s Office. Investigations revealed that several other persons were involved in this fraud. The CID is conducting further investigations.
