NIE Director General, best Korean language teachers felicitated

National Institute of Education (NIE) Director General Dr. Sunil Nawarathna has been awarded the prestigious Citation Award from the from the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Education of the Republic of Korea Yoo Eun-Hae. This award has been conferred in recognition of the outstanding contribution to the promotion of Korean language, development of future talent and advancement of the stature of Korean language based on his strong sense of duty.

Sunil Nawarathna has played an active role in strengthening bilateral relations between Korea and Sri Lanka by adopting the Korean language as a foreign language in the advanced level curriculum of Sri Lanka from this year onwards.

Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka Santhush Woonjin Jeong presented the award to Dr. Sunil Nawarathna and to the best Korean language teachers at a special luncheon ceremony held on December 2,2021.

Ambassador Santhush said: “I highly value the significant achievement and contribution of Dr. Sunil Nawarathna to successfully promote Korean Studies in Sri Lanka. Also I deeply appreciate all the teachers who have faithfully attended the online capacity building programme of Korean language and shown great achievement! You have set a great example by successfully completing this programme and have become precious assets to Korea-Sri Lanka relations. Subapethum!!

Education is the best investment available to ensure a bright future for a nation. Today we celebrate these wonderful achievements thanks to your efforts to promote Korean language education in Sri Lanka. Your valuable support and cooperation have brought our two countries closer together. I am thankful to all of you for your contribution and I hope we continue this academic cooperation to foster stronger bilateral relations between Korea and Sri Lanka.”

Addressing the Luncheon gathering, Dr. Sunil Nawarathna extended his thankfulness to Ambassador Santhush and the Korean government for the honorable recognition. He further mentioned that without the support of NIE and the Education Ministry this initiative would not be made possible within a short time. He commended Korea’s great economic miracle and stated that there are many lessons Sri Lanka can learn from Korea. He stated, “We must focus on building more invisible bridges through cultural and language programmes.”

At the ceremony, the best Korean language teachers were awarded certificates of achievement for their outstanding performances during the online capacity building programme which was recently completed. The Ambassador handed over the certificates to the following teachers, T.H.V. Shyamali Jayarathna,P.D. Ayesha Dilanji, W.A. Shanika Priyadarshani,

E.M.A.T.K. Ekanayake and M.G. Krishani Sudeshika, as tokens of appreciation for their invaluable service and felicitated their efforts that contribute to deepen the cultural ties between the two countries.

Sectional Head of the National Institute of Education, Ven. Theripaha Medhalankara Thera, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Premathilake, Deputy Director General of the National Institute of Education Dr. Dharshana Samaraweera. Second Secretary and third Secretary of the Korean Embassy Lim Soyeon and Jinjoo Sung also attended the ceremony.
