Twin talent!

16-year-old twin sisters Inosha and Nimasha Dissanayake, Grade 12 students of Girls High School, Kandy, are talented swimmers who were coached by Indika Dehigama, a veteran swimming coach of the school. They participated in chess,gymnastics and athletics in the Primary School and both girls received ProficiencyAwards in Levels 1 and 2 in gymnastics organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Gymnastics Association and received proficiency in level 3 and 4 in gymnastics in the same Association and in the same year.

They were placed first in the Gymnastic Skills contest organizedby Girls High School, Kandy, held at the auditorium of St Anthony’s College,Katugastota. In 2015 Inosha was placed first in the under 11 Long Jump at the Inter House Sports Meet. She was a member of the 200M Medley Relay of the School and she was qualified for the age group relay championship. The other members were Nimasha, Senuri amd Chamodya. In swimming in 2015 Inosha was awarded the Basic Rescue certificate by the Life Saving Association of Sri Lanka.

She was placed first in 25M, 50M Back Stroke events in the School Inter House Swimming meets in the years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. She was placed second at the competition for new inventions held at E L Sennayake Library, Kandy, in 2017. In 2018 she was selected to the Novices Age Category and she was placed fifth in the Under 13 – 50M Back Stroke event at the Sri Lanka Schools Novices Swimming Championship held at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo. In the same year she was awarded Merit and in 2020 ‘Super Merit in the Colours Award Ceremony’ of the school. Inosha was a member of the Primary and Junior Western Band and School Choir in 2014. She has got through her GCE (O/L) with 8A’s and her intention is to do higher studies in the Mathemetics Stream.

Nimasha also did chess, gymnastics and athletics in the Primary Schooland now she is involved in swimming just like her sister. At the Inter House Sports Meet in 2015 in the Under 11 age category, she was placed first in High Jump, 75M and 100M races representing Sansom House. In 2016 she was placed third and in 2017 and 2018 Nimasha was placed second in High Jump event in the same meet. In swimming, in 2015, Nimasha qualified at the age of ten in the 50M Breast Stroke. She was selected to the age category Novices Aquatic Championship. In the same year she was awarded the Basic Rescue Certificate by the Life Saving Association of Sri Lanka. In 2016 she was placed second in 50M Breast Stroke and placed fourth in 100M Breast stroke. She qualified for the 43rd Sri lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Championship held at Sugathadasa Stadium Complex and in 2017 she was placed second in the under 14 50M Breast Stroke in the Provincial Sports Meet organised by the Department of Education held at Digna Sports Complex Swimming pool. Nimasha became the Swimming Champion in the years 2019 and 2020 at the Under 16 in the School Inter House Swimming meet. She is the Swimming Captain for the year 2021.

She was a member of the Primary and Junior Western Band and at present a member of the Senior Brass Band of the School and a member of the Primary Choir.Nimasha got through her G.C.E.(O/L) with 8As and her intention is to excel in the Science stream. Both girls are thankful to the Principal of Girls High School Malkanthi Abeygunasekera, POG, Swimming coach and the teachers in charge of swimming for the encouragement and guidance given to them.
