Two promising players Senura Silva of Ananda College, Colombo, and Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy have been named boys and girls under 18 top seeds at the Junior National Table Tennis Championship which will be played today and tomorrow at the Bandaragama Indoor Stadium. A total number of 270 players comprising 145 boys and 135 girls, will compete to be crowned as the National Champion in their respective age group in this event which is conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL). This is the first time Junior National championships will be played at the newly built Bandararagama Indoor Stadium.
The age group events that will be conducted are Boys and Girls Under 10, 12, 15, and 18. The Under 10 and 12 events will be held after a lapse of 2 years as these age group events were not held during the year. Two Under 15 and 18 tournaments were held since the players were of mature age and can understand the safety rules that they were to abide Senura the 15-year-old present rank number paddler of the men’s open event came to this junior National with more international experience. He also seeded number one at the boys under 15 age group while Bimendee also named top seed of under 15 girls age group and both Senura and Bimadee are
favourites to win the Junior National crown.
Jithara Warnakulasuriya of Ladies College and Janith Batugedera of Royal College are named the bottom seed of the girls under 18 and boys under 15 singles events respectively. Jithara is also the bottom seed of under 15 girls singles event while Janith who performed well at the recently concluded World Youth International TT Championship in Oman is named third seed of boys under 12 age group. Dewmith Weerasena of Lyceum Nugegoda is the top seed of boys under 12 as well as under 15 fourth seed player.
