UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene on Wednesday said that the Opposition is not concerned about the issues faced by the people.

“The Opposition is not bothered whether people are living or not,” Wijewardene said.

He said UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had allocated funds and laid the foundation stone to build the Kinniya bridge when he was Prime Minister.

Wijewardene was speaking during a protest campaign held opposite the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha on Wednesday evening. Kegalle District UNP leader Sandith Samarasinghe, Kegalle District electorate organizer Lilan Amarakone and UNP Opposition Leader of the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha M.B.M. Shariff were present.

Wijewardene said that the country needs a UNP government which has a plan for the uplift of the economy. “I believe that we will be able to achieve it. That is what the people of the country want,” he said.

He said that the UNP is organizing a series of protests as the people of the country are faced with much hardship everyday.

“Today there is no gas, sugar, milk powder, cement. There is a situation where people are being deprived of their jobs. They do not have money,” he said. “People in this country are living with great difficulties and hardships. We are protesting against that. This Government does not care at all about the people.”

“During the tenure of our government, we commenced more than 40 projects to construct bridges and flyover bridges. This Government has not completed any of them properly. Today, we are happy that arrangements have been made to open the Kelani bridge that the UNP commenced building. However, if the Kinniya bridge had been built, we would not have lost several young children,” Wijewardene said.
