220 rural tanks in A’pura renovated

About 220 dilapidated rural tanks had been renovated under the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project, Wew Gam Pubuduwa.

Over 325 rural tanks and anicuts under 30 cascade systems (Ellanga) in Yanoya, Malwathuoya and Mi Oya in the Anuradhapura, Vauniya, Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Trincomale, Puttlam, and Mannar Districts will be renovated under the project.

At the commencement of the project in 2017, the International Green Climate Fund (GCF) had agreed to provide Rs. 6,664 million as an outright donation with a counterpart Government investment of Rs. 2,450 million for the seven-year rehabilitation project.

However, the GCF suspended financial facilities mid-way. On the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Irrigation Ministry absorbed the Project as a sub-project of the ‘Wari Saubhagya’ (Irrigation Prosperity) Programme. The Ministry continues to provide funds and resources for the Project.
