Akeesa Demindi Herath the athletic star of Girls’ High School

Thirteen year old, Akeesa Demindi Herath, a Grade Eight student of Girls’ High School, Kandy who was admitted to the school from Grade one in 2014 started her Athletic career under the coaching of Chandana Abeyratne. She did her first event in Athletics in the 50 Metre race and secured the first place. and she was selected to the School Kids Athletic team.

She secured the third place at the Annual Athletic Meet organized by the Kandy District Athletic

Association in 2016 and she became second in the following year in 2017 in the same event and in 2018 she won the first place in the 50 metre race and in the same year she was second at the All Island Kids Athletic Meet organized by the Kandy District Athletic Association in the 40 & 60 Metre Races in the under 11 age category.

At the School Inter House Sports Meet as a member of the ‘Lawrence House’ of the School she secured the second place in the 80 Metre race and Long Jump event. her Relay team secured the second place at the All Island Relay championship and her team consisted of Akeesa, Minduli, Sandali and Nimesha) and her team went on to secure the third place in 4 x 100 and 4 x 50 Relay events at the All Island Meet held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo in the year 2019.

The Relay team secured the third place in the same Relay events at the Junior Tarbet Meet in 2019 and she

Won colours at the Athletic Championship organized by the Department of Education.

Akeesa started Chess and Badminton at Junior level in School and after a few years of training she had to concentrate fully on Athletics as she had to do her studies as well. While doing sports she was involved in some extra curricular activities too and she hopes to continue her sports abilities other than Athletics at Senior level and her intention is to do athletics at a higher level with the support of her Coach, Chandana Abeyratne.
