First Black Fungus death reported from Karapitiya Teaching Hospital

The Karapitiya Teaching hospital yesterday confirmed the first death caused by Black Fungus – a deadly infection that killed over 200 people in India. This is the first Black Fungus death reported in Sri Lanka. The person has died of COVID pneumonia at the Hospital on September 29 and the hospital has referred the tissue samples of the dead person to the Medical Research Institute for further investigations.

Hospital sources said that MRI reports confirmed that he had died of Black Fungus which is medically known as Mucormycosis the deceased is a 56-year-old person living in the the Elpitiya MOH Division.
