‘Kurunegala District shelters over 10,000 disabled persons’

Kurunegala District Social Services Officer W.M. Amarathilaka Banda told the Daily News that a recent survey conducted by the department revealed that there are 10,100 disabled persons in the Kurunegala District.

He said that a meeting will be held at the Kurunegala District Secretariat on October 28 to make the officers responsible for the needs of these persons aware of the issue.

“This programme is organised by the Community Based Rehabilitation Project. There are 3,304 kidney patients, 5,845 disabled persons and 36 centenarians in the district who receive Rs.5,000 monthly allowance.

There are 38,680 persons receive Rs. 2,000 Elders’ monthly allowance. Over Rs.123 million is spent by the Social Service Section monthly for these payments,” he added.

The Social Services Officer also said that reportedly, there are some more unidentified disabled persons in the District. We try our best to identify them through our officers. We have decided to pay an attendance allowance to all those who attend the meeting on October 28,” he added.
