Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the two persons who were arrested for assaulting and injuring a group of Police Officers in the Colombo city limits are Island Re-Convicted Criminals (IRCs) and the law will be strictly enforced against those who carry out such attacks.

The two Police Officers were attacked with sharp weapons in two police divisions in the Colombo city limits on October 15.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspect is an IRC criminal and has been imprisoned for several previous offences.

On the same night, when two Police Officers on duty in the Modara Police Division had checked a suspect, he had assaulted the Police Officers with a sharp weapon.

The suspect was taken into custody. The injured Police Officer was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

He is also an IRC criminal and has been convicted of a number of previous crimes, including drug trafficking, police said.

The Police Media Spokesman said that it is a criminal offence under the Penal Code to inflict serious injuries on public servants while they are on duty and obstruct their duties.
