Wayamba Ela Project work to be completed by 2024

Construction work of the Wayamba Ela project to provide an adequate supply of water for farmers in the Wayamba Province during the Yala and Maha Seasons will be completed by 2024, Youth and Sports and Digital Technology and Enterprise Development State Minister Namal Rajapaksa said.

Under this project, there will be 90 kms of new and upgraded canals including two underground tunnels and two new earth gravity dams together with the construction of the Maha Kithula and Mahakirula reservoirs.

A number of small and large scale development projects have already been initiated to fulfil the peoples’ pledges outlined in the Vistas of Prosperity policy framework.

All these projects are expected to be fulfilled on scheduled time following the proper standards. Thereby special mechanism will be made to rectify all the shortcomings identified when the projects are being implemented.

The Minister was participating on the inspection tour to the construction sites of Mahakithula reservoir at Kurunegala District and Maha Ela irrigation project in Anuradhapura district yesterday said that work on both irrigation projects have been expedited to provide water for both drinking and cultivation purposes on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “The water will transfer to seven large tanks and 326 rural small tanks located in the Galewela, Polpithigama, Mahawa, and Ahatuwewa areas to facilitate the irrigation of 12,500 farmlands. This project will provide direct and indirect benefits to nearly 40,000 farmer families,” the Minister added.
