Agri sector facing a huge crisis – Former President

Former President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that the agriculture sector in the country is facing an unprecedented crisis. Sirisena was addressing the 21st death anniversary commemoration of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike held at the SLFP headquarters yesterday.

“Former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike became a successful leader as she had a vibrant team,” he said.

He said that the secret of her success is that she had an honest team. “People are talking about a fertilizer crisis and other crises in the agriculture sector. The farmers have been stranded. I don’t know whether I could go to Polonnaruwa again,” he said.He added that all those including himself who ran the country through the open economic system should be responsible for the dwindling foreign reserves. “People have to pay the price for improper management of foreign reserves under the Open economic system,” he said.
