Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Rtd) Dr. Sarath Weerasekara has called for an inquiry into the incident where the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had interrogated several media persons despite being issued instructions not to do so.
The relevant directives have been given to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne.
Minister Weerasekara had also instructed the IGP to issue directives to hand over the investigations regarding the garlic scam from the Peliyagoda Special Crimes Division to the CID and initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Speaking to the Daily News, Minister Weerasekara said that he had summoned the IG, Ministry Secretary and the Peliyagoda Police over the investigation of this incident and subsequent to discussions with them, had made the directive to hand over the investigation to the CID as it was determined that it was required to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter. He also said that this is not the first instance such incidents had taken place and thus, he handed over the investigations to the CID in order to carry out a thorough investigation.
