Esandi Jayasinghe the athletic and netball star

Seventeen year old Esandi Jayasinghe, a Grade Twelve student of Girls High School, Kandy in the Science stream, started her school career from Grade one onwards and she is a fine Athlete and an outstanding Netball player.

She started her Athletic career under Chandana Abeyratne from the primary school and continued representing the school ‘Eaton House’ at the Annual Sports Meet and placed 2nd in the 80 Metre Race in the year 2017 while she came 3rd in 100 M. 200 M. and 400 M. races. She was also in the winning 4 x 400 M. Relay team representing the same house in 2018.

Esandi secured the second place in the 100 metres.Race at the Sir John Tarbet Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in 2017 in the Under 14 age group. After her outstanding individual performance in these races she concentrated mostly on the Relay events running the third lap and the other members were Mayuri Attanayake, Umasha Wijenayake and Aloka Wijeyathilake. Their Relay team secured the second place at the 4 x 100 Relay event while securing the first place at the Relay event in the year 2017.

In 2018 the Relay team secured the third place in the 4 x 100 M. relay event and the same position at the 4 x 100 Relay event at the Provincial Athletic meet organized by the Dept. of Education in the same year. Their Relay Team came first in the 4 x 100 Relay event at the ‘Supannigar Games’ held in Thailand and the School appointed Esandi as the Senior Athletic Vice Captain in 2021 and she won the School Super Merit Award in 2018.

As a Netball player she started in 2016 as an Under 18 player under the Captaincy of Tharushi Samaratunge and they came up to the quarter finals at the All Island Milo Trophy Netball tournament and she played as Wing Attacker and Centre in the same year.

She was a member of the School Netball team which was selected as the ‘Super Eight’ at the All Island Netball tournament in 2016 and the team toured Malaysia in 2018 at the ‘Pesta Bola’ Netball tournament under the captaincy of Farmida Feroz. Esandi was a member of the School Best Eight teams at the All Island Jenny Green Netball team under the captaincy of Tharushi Smaratunge and she won Netball half colors at the School Colors eve in 2020.

Esandi is a bright student passing G.C.E.(O/L) with Eight ‘A’ s and her ambition is to be a Medical Doctor in profession as her parents are also in the same Profession while continuing her Sports abilities and she is thankful to the Principal of the School, Malkanthi Abeygunasekera, POG Priyani Dissanayake and Athletic and Netball coaches for the encouragement and support given to her to come to this standard.
