Anuradhapura farmers to learn Japanese agricultural methodologies

A agricultural development programme to encourage farmers to adapt to advanced Japanese agricultural promotion methodologies has been launched in the Anuradhapura district. The "Made in Sri Lanka" Institute in cooperation with Japanese authorities has implemented the project on the theme "International turning point in a prosperous state."

This programme is being implemented under its First Phase in the Kekirawa, Ipalogama, Palugaswewa, Thirappane, Palagala, Nachchaduwa, Nuwaragam Palatha (Central), Rajangane, Galenbindunuwewa, Kahatagasdigiliya and Horowpothana DS Divisions.

"Made in Sri Lanka" company Managing Director Sandhun Kahawattha participating in an awareness programme held in Anuradhapura recently under the First Phase, 1,000 able farmers in the selected DS Jurisdictions would join the programme.

He said that each prospective farmer would be provided with agricultural machinery, carbonic fertilizer, seeds etc. adequate to cultivate one acre.

"These farmers will be trained to cultivate their crops using methodologies and batches of farmers will be sent to Japan to gather practical and theoretical knowledge in advanced agricultural strategies practiced in Japan. Also the crops harvested would be sold to the network of super markets to be opened at every Divisional Secretariat Division with its main super market based in Kurunegala. In addition, all arrangements have been made for the establishment of a 100 acres Japanese style model farm in Nabadawewa area in Kekirawa DS Division for the purpose of building up confidence and encouraging local farmers about the novel introductory agricultural methodologies," Kahawattha said.

"We have also planned to introduce a new Corps Insurance Scheme to provide compensation for crop failures owing to various natural disasters," Kahawattha emphasized.

He requested the Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayake and the Divisional Secretaries to extend the fullest support to make the project a success. The relevant Divisional Secretaries Residential Project Managers, Assistant Agrarian Development Commissioner, officials of the Fertilizer Secretariat and farmer organisations representatives in the 11 Divisional Secretariat Divisions were present at the introductory awareness meeting.
