TNA endorses UN High Commissioner’s statement

TNA Jaffna District MP M.A. Sumanthiran said the TNA endorsed the statement issued by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.

Speaking to the media in Vavuniya, the MP said that the oral statement of the Commissioner was more pertinent after the UN Human Rights Commission passed Resolution 46/1 on Accountability, Reconciliation and Human Rights last March.

He said that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) was pleased by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Twitter in June that his government is ready to implement the standard Resolution on Accountability, Reconciliation and Human Rights. However, Sumanthiran noted that individual ministers have been issuing statements on the Resolution recently, expressing denial which was a very serious matter.

Citing several examples of the deteriorating human rights situation in Sri Lanka, the MP reiterated that in the case of missing persons, justice should be done as expected by their relatives.

He urged Member States to be vigilant about the current state of emergency in Sri Lanka and the dangers it poses, and said the government could intensify militarisation in the future.
