CEA initiates study tour on Maragala Mountain Range

The Central Environment Authority (CEA) on the directive of the Environment Ministry recently organised a study tour at the Maragala Mountain Range in Moneragala to make a scientific investigation on the Ecological, Social and Archeological importance of this historical Mountain Environmental Protection Area (EPA)

The three-day study tour was organised by CEA Deputy Director General (Environmental Mangement and Assessment) N.S. Gamage. Director (Natural Rresources Management) Priyanganie Gunathilaka, Director (Uva Province) A. C. S Najeeb, Assistant Director (Moneragala District Office) Thusitha Disssanayaka also attended.

The Maragala Mountain EPA is a unique ecosystem located in the Moneragala District. It is the only tropical rainforest in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka.

The catchment area of Hulanda Oya, Heda Oya and Maragala Oya and several streams are also in this mountain range providing drinking water for 5,500 families in the surrounding areas.

The range has been declared as an Environmental Protection Area (EPA) by an Extra Ordinary Gazette of August 1, 2008.

Director N.S. Gamage said that necessary amendments will be done to the Gazette Notification to conserve the mountain range.
