‘Order to release baby elephants will never be revoked’ - Additional Magistrate

Colombo Additional Magistrate T.J. Prabakaran told Court yesterday that the order issued to release the baby elephants to the original owners on the instructions of the Attorney General will never be revoked.

The Magistrate rejected a petition filed by members of an environmental organisation seeking permission to comment on the court’s decision to release the elephants.

Accordingly, the order issued by the Court on September 6 to release the baby elephants is still valid, the Magistrate said.

Deputy Solicitor General Dilan Ratnayake appeared for the CID on behalf of the complainant.

The Deputy Solicitor General told Court that the court order issued on the 6th to register the baby elephants in the custody of the CID when they were taken into custody was legal.

The Deputy Solicitor General stated that there was no need to change the verdict as the CID had previously reported to Court that there were no suspects in the case and did not intend to proceed with the case.

President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda, Attorney-at-Law Ravindranath Dabare and Attorney-at-Law Dilushi de Alwis appeared for several environmental organisations.
