Maheesha Bandara the netball star from Girls’ High School

Eighteen year old Maheesha Prathibhani Bandara, a Grade Thirteen student of Girls’ High School, Kandy in the Arts stream is an outstanding Netball player coached by Suwini de Alwis,

Maheesha started her Netball career in the year 2013 under the captaincy of Vihara Marasinghe and played as Goal Shooter and Wing defence. In 2015 she was in the Champion Under 14 Netball team and played at the All Island ‘Jenne Green’ Memorial Netball Tournament organized by the Girls’ High School, Kandy in the same year. Her School Netball team obtained the National Level ‘Best Eight’ position along with Musaeus College, Colombo, Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala and Sangamitta, Galle which were among the Schools selected to this position.

The School Champion Netball team played at the Zonal and Provincial Netball tournament organised by the Department of Education from 2018 to 2020 and their team toured Malaysia for the ‘Pesta Bola Jaring’ Netball championship in the year 2017 and became Runners-up.

Their Netball team became ‘ Netball Champions’ at the National Level Championship under the captaincy of Dulmini Thilakaratne in 2018 and Maheesha was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the First South Asian under 16 Netball tournament held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2019 and Netball teams from Nepal, India and Pakistan participated at this tournament.

Sri Lanka Netball team won the Championship under the Captaincy of Nethmi Wijenayake of Musaeus College, Colombo and they beat the Indian team in the finals to win the Gold Medal. Maheesha was the Captain of the Netball team of the School in 2020 and she became the Senior prefect and her intention is to be a National level Netball player while doing her higher studies to become a Lawyer by profession.

Maheesha is thankful to the sports loving Principal, Malkanthi Abeygunasekera and her Netball coach as well as the teachers-in-charge for the guidance and support given to their Netball team to come to this standard.
