Sathosa, CID directed to probe garlic fiasco

Trade Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena has directed Sathosa officials to probe the handing over of two containers of garlic imported for Sathosa to a third party and to take legal actions against those responsible.

Cabinet approval has been granted to provide essential items which have not been released by the importers from the Port through the Sathosa network to consumers at concessionary prices.

Even though this process is progressing well, two garlic containers have been released to Lanka Sathosa have been sold to a third party without approval of the Sathosa management. The Minister instructed the Sathosa management to take legal action against those responsible for this scam which has been done at a time when the government is engaged in providing essential items to customers at concessionary rates. The Minister also advised to initiate an immediate investigation on this incident and submit him the report. He also instructed the Sathosa Chairman to lodge a complaint with the CID.

Addressing a media briefing held with several garment manufacturers on Saturday, he said that local manufactures have sufficient and extra stocks of clothes and readymade garments to be released to the local market.

“We will also create a programme through the CWE and Sathosa outlets to supply the required garments at a lower price to customers in the future,”he added.
