Veteran teacher Alahendra passes away

Veteran English teacher of Galle Kamal Alahendra passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

He was a past student of the Galle Mahinda College. Incidentally, the last school he served was also his alma mater.

During his long career of teaching over four decades, he had been a commendable teacher who had molded many impressive and upright citizens of the country in diverse fields.

He was also a frontline political doyen of Galle who believed firmly in socialist ideology. He worked strenuously for his course until his death.

Alahendra was also a gallant trade unionist who constantly struggled for the teachers’ rights and privileges. Owing to his gallant trade union activities, he was immensely harassed by the then rulers. He had been punished many a time with transfers to many distant areas. Nevertheless he was invincible in his chosen fields.

He was a committed activist of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) and a well-respected mentor and theoretician of the Students’ Movement.

He served as the Advisor of the Lanka Jathika Students’ Union, Galle of the CPSL.

He was also a talented musician who had mastered the mandolin.
