MDA to produce Organic Fertilizer for Maha season

The Mahaweli Development Authority (MDA) along with the Agrarian Development Department has launched a Organic fertilizer producing programme adhering to the Government’s Organic Fertilizer Only for Cultivation National Project.

Mahaweli 'H' Mahailluppallama Unit Manager Kapila Kumara said that 5,600 farmers belonging to farmer organisations in the division will cultivate 10,200 acres in the 2021/22 Maha season. He said that in the last season, these farmers applied 204,000 kg of TSP and 224,000 kg of MOP and 880,000 kg f urea for their cultivation.

''The Mahaillppallama Mahaweli Unit needs 4,080 tonnes of Organic fertilizer. The Mahaweli Authority along with the Agrarian Development and the Irrigation Department offer one tractor load of invasive aquatic weeds such as Japan Jabara, moss varieties and Salvinia among others, which will be removed from several tanks including Ganthiriyagama Tank to every family. In addition, we provide them with Eppawala phosphate adequately to produce Organic fertilizer for the season. We are conducting awareness programmes and training for the farmers in this regard,'' Kapila Kumara said.

He said that 70 per cent of the Organic fertilizer for the Mahailluppallama Division has already been produced for the Maha season.
