Vaccinating students will begin soon – Health Minister

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday said that vaccinating children between 12 and 18 will commence as soon as possible.

The Minister said that due to the COVID pandemic, schools had to be closed from time to time for about a year and half and therefore, the vaccination of children should be commenced to open schools as soon as possible. He was addressing an online meeting at the Health Ministry yesterday (9).

The Minister said that several international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), have pointed out several criteria for vaccinating children.

With the commencement of vaccination for children, children from grade 7 to grade 13 can be vaccinated, the Minister said. The schools will be opened once the vaccination of schoolchildren is completed as the non-academic staff including teachers has been fully vaccinated.

The Minister said that the first dose of the vaccine has been given to 34 per cent and the second to 12 per cent in the age group of 20-29 years.
