Central Bank Scam tarnished country’s image - State Minister

The infamous Central Bank Bond Scam that transpired during the period of the previous ‘Good Governance’ Government not only tarnished the country’s image but also caused irreparable economic damage, Samurdhi, Household Economy, Micro Finance, Self-employment, Business Development and Underutilized State Resources Development State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.

Not only the Central Bank robbery, but also other large scale corruptions, wastage and misappropriation of public funds during the 2015-2019 period contributed to the current economic crisis, he said adding that the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation.

Speaking to the Daily News, State Minister Semasinghe said that those in the Opposition are now engaged in a mudslinging campaign against the incumbent Government.

“It is they who have put this country in such a perilous situation when they were in Government.

The Government led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been taking every effort to salvage the economy while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in a strategic manner,” he commented.

He added that the Opposition parties, without working together with the Government, are trying to sabotage all people friendly projects of the Government.

“They work against the organic fertilizer drive and support those unscrupulous traders who are trying to create artificial shortages of essential commodities, such as sugar, milk powder, LP gas etc.

They hoodwink the public through false and fabricated propaganda to tarnish the image of the Government. They even find fault with the Government’s COVID-19 vaccination programme.

The Opposition is trying to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic in their greed to grab power,” Semasinghe added.
