PMB buys paddy for Yala season from Galle farmers

The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) commenced purchasing paddy harvests of farmers in the Galle District for the Yala season this year from the Walahanduwa Agrarian Services Division in Galle since Tuesday (31) The initiative was launched from the Yakgaha and Pinnaduwa Grama Niladhari Divisions of the Walahanduwa Agrarian Services Division.

A kilo of wet paddy was purchased at Rs. 42 and a kilo of dry paddy at Rs. 51.50. The farmers can also bring the dried paddy to the warehouse at the Yakkalamulla Agrarian Services Centre and sell their harvest, the Southern Provincial Assistant Commissioner of P.M.B. Indika De Silva stated. The Paddy Purchasing mission is coordinated by the Galle district office of the Agrarian Development Department. The purchase of paddy from farmers is carried out through PMB agents.

At the initial stage 30095 kilograms of wet paddy were bought from the farmers in one day. Agriculture Research and Production Assistants M.P. Nirmala, M.K.M. Mithila Lalanthi, of Yaggaha and Pinnaduwa divisions set the programme in motion under the directions of Walahanduwa Agrarian Development Regional Officer S.A.M. Shyamali.

Galle District Agrarian Development Assistant Commissioner K.S.W. Priyanjan and Assistant Commissioner Hemapala Warshawithana directed the programme.
