Mega aloe vera product export project gets Cabinet approval

US$ 300 mn investment, 66 acres for factory complex:

Cabinet approval has been granted to provide lands on a long-term lease basis to Aura Lanka Herbals to implement a herbal medicine products project from the Aloe Vera plant for export,Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department, he said Aura Lanka Herbals (Pvt) Ltd. had submitted a project proposal titled ‘Dry Zone Rural Economic Development Aloe Vera Project’ to start a herbal medicine manufacturing industry from the aloe vera plant for export under the organic farming system in the Anuradhapura District.

Under this project, aloe vera roots, tubers, gel and external parts of leaves are expected to be used to make high-energy drinks, pills, ointments, inhalers and hair oils.

The total investment of the project is US Dollar 783 million and the investor has planned to invest US Dollars 300 million as the capital investment.

It is expected to set up nurseries for the production of aloe vera seedlings in 2,000 acres in Rajanganaya and Nochchiyagama Divisional Secretariat Divisions and 102,000 acres in the Anuradhapura District will be used for the cultivation of aloe vera using the plants produced by the nurseries under the said project.

It is proposed to involve families who own land on grants and licences and families who enjoy government lands for cultivation to the project. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution tabled by the Finance Minister and the Lands Minister to release 66 acres to the company on a long-term lease basis for 30 years as per the provisions of the Crown Land Ordinance to construct and maintain the factory and operating office premises and the storage and operational purposes of the project.
