DEJP decries teachers’ protests

The Deshapremi Eksath Jathika Pakshaya (DEJP) in a complaint the IGP has urged him to take necessary legal action to suspend the ongoing protests organized by individuals posing as teachers disregarding the health guidelines issued by the Health Ministry to contain the spread of Covid 19 in the country.

DEJP General Secretary Sugath Hewapathirana made this complaint to the Inspector General of Police on Saturday. Hewapathirana in his complaint has cited that these protests will definitely lead to the disruption of law and order and public peace and urged the IGP to take prompt action to suspend these efforts.

“Anger and hate is boiling in the society against these pseudo teacher trade unionists who encourage their members to spread the COVID-19 pandemic in the country by organizing protests during the pandemic period”, he said.

He added that the Teachers’ Unions are staging such a protest at a time when the Government has taken a policy decision to solve their salary anomaly issues. ““These elements have ulterior motives which are beyond the realization of their rights,” he said

therefore, there is a possibility of developing a public resistance against these protest campaigns and thereby violating the law and order.

He said that the Government schools were kept closed for over a year continuously due the pandemic and steps are being taken to expedite the reopening of schools.

If the pandemic situation goes beyond the authorities’ control due to the irresponsible acts by few individuals, “the GCE Ordinary and other examinations which have already been scheduled may not be held as scheduled if the pandemic situation worsens,” he said.
