Umariya granted bail

Popular singer Umaria Sinhawansa has been released on bail and her driving license was temporarily suspended.

She was arrested by the Welikada Police last evening following a vehicle accident near the Rajagiriya flyover

The accident occurred when a car driven by Umaria collided with a three-wheeler.

The three-wheeler driver was injured in the incident and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Popular musician Umaria Sinhawansa who was arrested by the Welikada Police on Saturday in connection with an accident which injured a three-wheeler driver was released on bail today, Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said. He said that Umariya’s vehicle had collided with a three-wheeler around 5.15 on Saturday evening causing serious injuries to the three-wheeler driver, who was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Umaria Sinhawansa was arrested and produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate today and was released on a surety bail of Rs. 500,000.

Her driving license was temporarily suspended until the Judicial Medical Report was received. It was established that she had not been under intoxication at the time of the accident. It was also revealed in Court that Sinhawansa had assisted the injured three-wheeler driver and ensured he received prompt medical treatment.

The Police Spokesman said that the 38-year-old three-wheeler driver who had been critically injured in the accident is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.The defendant also agreed to pay a sympathetic compensation of Rs. 80,000 to the three-wheeler driver who was injured in the incident.However, the Attorney representing Umaria told Court that she had proceeded on a green light while it is believed that the three-wheeler driver had proceeded while the signal light was red.The Magistrate ordered the Rajagiriya Police to summon the case on the 18th.
