Kurunegala Plantations records bumper turmeric harvest

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kurunegala Plantations Limited, a fully Government owned company, S.M.M.Samarakoon said that the company can earn a profit of Rs.11 million this year from the bumper harvest of turmeric cultivation in the Kurunegala District.

He said that although turmeric was grown in a very small-scale by the company, this is the first time turmeric was grown in a bigger way with the assistance from the Department of Export Agriculture, which guided the company from planting, providing technical know-how up to harvesting.

The CEO said that five acres of the estate land in Kalawewa, Dodangaslanda, Kurunegala, Narammala, Dambadeniya and Katugampola were planted with 3,600 kgs of seeds. The harvest was 36,000 kg and the highest profit per land was derived from the Kalawewa Estate.

“Now we have extended turmeric cultivation to 20 acres,” he said.

He said that turmeric is an ideal inter-crop with coconut and mangoes. Of 12,250 acres, we maintain 9,000 acres of coconut and there is ample space between coconut palms for turmeric,” he said.
