Baywatch:

Self-aware and clueless

The 90’s beach-set ‘Baywatch’ series has become a household name in every imaginable nation across the world. Starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, the series entertained masses and was second maybe only to the’Friends’ series. Therefore, when news went around about a ‘Baywatch’ film being in the making, it generated much hype and expectations.

With Dwayne Johnson taking on Mitch Buchannon’s role this lifeguard series showed promise for it’s cast and settings. However, equipped with wafer-thin material and terrible editing, fans of the TV series are plunged into two and half hours of boredom.

Revolving around an elite lifeguard crew, ‘Baywatch’, the film, projects that the team needs to stick together to keep their shores clean and secure. Their efforts are hampered by the beautiful but devious Victoria Leeds.

There is only so much that even an actor of Dwayne Johnson’s talents can do when presented material which hardly has much to offer.

Though she is given a limited scope as an actress, Priyanka Chopra shines as the baddie of the film. Not only does she look hot in the stylist attire but she manages to outshine some of the other female cast members - some who are given more prominent roles.

The two main ladies in red, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach, despite showing off their svelte figures, are startlingly forgettable. Sadly these two have very little to do in the story which make them stand out.

The TV series embodied a serious theme. The film is more of a comic adaptation of the mini series. The outcome proved that it is a bad idea. You hardly get any laughs out of this project as it’s storyline does not hold much weight.

The main problem in this picture is that the scenes lack connection. This makes it seem like a line of episodes rather than a story. The only silver lining in this project is probably the scenes between Dwayne and Zac Efron. Their amusing banter is the one point which should be given at least a second glance.

It seems like a pity that the filmmakers did not go for some colours and brightness in the movie with plenty of sun, sand and sea. This wide screen version of the series is difficult to keep afloat.
