Over 47,000 quarantine violators arrested

The Police have so far arrested 47,579 people for violating the quarantine rules. Of this number, 41,000 have been prosecuted in Courts by the Police.

“The Police were not able to file cases for the remaining number of persons due to the closure and restrictions in Courts. According to the new COVID-19 health regulations issued by the Director General of Health Services until July 19, Courts outside the Western Province will be able to maintain a 50 percent capacity and Courts within the Western Province a 30 percent capacity. So we can increase the number of cases and prosecute the rest soon,” Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said violators of quarantine rules can be prosecuted under the provisions of the Quarantine and Disease Prevention Ordinance and under the Penal Code, which can result in a fine of up to Rs.10,000 and up to six months imprisonment or both.

Meanwhile, the Police arrested 339 persons for violating quarantine rules during a 24-hour operation that ended at 6.00 a.m. on Sunday (04).

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the highest number (54 persons) were arrested from Kuliyapitiya.
