Anandian Ranindu wins a Bronze Medal

Sri Lanka National Chess Champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Ananda College Colombo won the Bronze Medal in the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship 2021 of Zone 3.2 of FIDE, the South Asian Zone.

Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage attended Asoka Primary School Kalagedihena from Grade 1 to 3. He started his chess career when he was in grade 2 under Nimal Rathnasiri in 2009 and he was the first chess instructor. He developed his game under his guidance and that was the start of Ranindu’s relationship with chess. After that he introduced Ranindu to chess instructor Liyanapathirana. Ranindu trained under Tharindu Chandrasiri and Nethupul Athukorala till grade 6.

Ranindu Liyanage said “In 2010 Asian School Chess Championship was held in Sri Lanka. I was able to rank as 6th place and I won the country Gold Medal for under 7 age category. That medal change my journey and fortunately Ananda College invited me to join the college`s grade 3 class and continue my education at the college”.

Ranindu attended Ananda College Colombo from grade 3 in 2010. Ranindu trained under Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya at primary level and Mr. Prasanna Kurukulasuriya at upper level in Ananda College. He passed the O/L exam in 2019. He is studying Advanced Level Maths stream (Grade 12) in English Medium. He will sit A/L exam in 2022.

Ranindu said “My current Chess coach International Master Romesh Weerawardane is a well known coach and I play under his supervision. He gave me great support to develop my chess career and I was able to increase my International rating up to 2203 as my peak rating. I represented Sri Lanka many times for Asian and World Chess Championships and visited 11 countries Philipines, Greece, Thailand, Singapore, Romania, China, Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, Iran and india”.

Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage emerged from the Sri Lanka National Chess Championship and won the Grand Prix title in 2021.

International Achievements

* Asian Nations Cup 2016 (China) - represented the under 14 National team that won the bronze medal.

* West Asian Youth Chess Championship 2017 (Sri Lanka) – won the bronze medal in the under 14 age category and was awarded Candidate Master title from World Chess Federation (FIDE).

* Represented Under 16 National team for the World Youth Olympiad Chess Championship 2018 (Turkey)

* Participated for the World Junior (under 20 ) Chess Championship in 2018 (Turkey)

* Received best foreign player award in Delhi open Grandmaster tournament 2020 and Gujarat open Grandmaster tournament 2019 (India)

* Participated to the Asian Continental Chess Championship in 2021
