CAA to take action on prices charged by delivery services

State Minister of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna yesterday said action have been taken by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) on complaints made to the Authority by consumers against the exorbitant prices charged by delivery services distributing essential food items during the period of travel restrictions.

“It is reported that the consumers tend to get their daily essential items through delivery services due to travel restrictions imposed. We understand that these delivery services ease the burdens of consumers and are a relief for businesses as well. However, action has been taken by the Consumer Affairs Authority on complaints made to the CAA by consumers against the prices charged by the delivery services,” the State Minister said.

The State Minister had discussed with Delivery Service Providers and the business community to get a hands on information on pricing, pricing policy and its reasonableness.

Hence, a decision has been taken to implement a scheme to keep the prices charged by the delivery services at a reasonable level. They are to initiate registration for Delivery Service Providers with the Consumer Affairs Authority and regulate to ensure reasonable prices.

To formulate a policy on calculation of commissions and transport charges and impose a reasonable cap for selected sub-sectors. The main objective of these actions is to provide the delivery service at a reasonable price to those consumers who are ready to obtain the service and this would pave the way to improve the competitiveness and create a space to expand businesses for the business community.
