Sanduni Tharaka sportswoman par excellence

Volleyball player athlete, netball, player and cricketer Andaraweera Arachchige Sanduni Tharaka brought honour and fame to her school Vijayaba National School, Hungama and Pubudu Vijayaba Sports Club Hungama.

She was born on 4th April 1999 and initially admitted to Bataaththa South Primary School in 2005 when P. G. G. Edison was at the helm of the school and her first class teacher was Mrs. Lalani.

When she was at the school she participated in the team events at the Inter House Sports Meets up to Grade Four. From there she was drafted to Grade Five of Vijayaba National School in 2009 and she participated in the Inter House Sports Meet and in Long Jump and 100 metres she came third and when she was in Grade Seven her house team won the team events and they came first in Volleyball and second in Elle.

When she came to the Grade Ten at the Inter House Level she participated in Elle, Netball, Volleyball and Cricket and her Master in Charge was Wickramaratne.

In the mean time when she was under 17 her parents Chndrasiri Andaraweera and W. E. P. Priyantha advised their daughter to take up to volleyball and in 2014 she came under their school coach and Master in Charge of Volleyball Tharaka Ratnaweera and in the same year as a novice she participated in the Sri Lanka Youth National Sports Festival and in the same year at the District Level they came third.

Then in 2015 they swept the board at the lower level tournaments and in the All Island Schools Tournament they were the Champions and in the All Island Schools Meet they became third and in the Rupavahini Youth Council Tournament they came Runners Up and in 2017 after qualifying in lower levels they were the All Island under 20 Schools Champions and in the DSI Tournament they were the Runners Up.

Then in 2018 at the All Island under 22 Tournament they were the Runners Up and in the Sri Lanka Schools Volleyball Federation Tournament Cup they were third and the Sports Festival representing the Southern Province they became Champions.

In 2019 she joined Pubudu Wijaya Sports Club Hungama and played in the Tournament matches and in the mean time she passed the Advanced Level with 3 “A”s and qualified to join the Ruhunu University
