No oil spill from sinking ship - Operators

X-Press Feeders, operators of the container ship ‘X-Press Pearl’ said that there were no signs of an oil spill from the damaged container ship despite some international news agencies reporting to the contrary.

Some international news agencies said there was a large oil slick surrounding the damaged container ship in Sri Lanka which has been captured in satellite images.

X-Press Feeders, operators of the container ship ‘X-Press Pearl’ on Wednesday said, we confirm that the situation on scene remains under observation with no signs of debris and no confirmed reports of fuel oil pollution as of 18.00 Sri Lanka local time on Wednesday.

The ship’s aft portion remains on the seabed at a depth of about 21 meters, and the forward section remains afloat and is reported as stable.

The salvors remain on the scene to deal with any possible debris supported by the Sri Lankan Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, who have oil spill response capabilities on standby.

Representatives of ITOPF and MEPA visited the site and Oil Spill Response are monitoring updates from the scene and remain on standby to be deployed in case of any reported spill. Meanwhile Environment Minister Mahninda Amaraweera told journalists in Colombo yesterday that he had requested MEPA to investigate the oil spill stories.
