JICA provides PPEs for Waste Management Workers

The JICA Sri Lanka Office provided a stock of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Western Provincial Council (WPC) comprising 634 pairs of boots, 31,700 face masks, 430 Personal Protective Kits, hand sanitisers and disinfectants for Solid Waste Management Workers in 49 local authorities. This is JICA’s 2nd provision of PPEs to the WPC during the COVID pandemic.

The JICA has been extending technical support for managing waste in Sri Lanka for a long time. Under the ‘Project for Formulation of Western Province Solid Waste Management Master Plan’, the JICA is working with the National Solid Waste Management Support Centre at the State Ministry of Provincial Council and Local Government and Waste Management Authority in the Western Province along with relevant government agencies and local authorities to formulate a long-term plan for solid waste management in the Western Province. The project also help the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) of local authorities under emergency situations. The grant will enable local authorities to continue essential work during the pandemic.

JICA Sri Lanka Office Chief Representative Yamada Tetsuya handed over the stock of PPEs to Marshal of the Air Force, Western Province Governor Roshan Goonetileke. Yamada said that Solid Waste Management is an essential service for the community and it is vital to pay attention towards the personal hygiene of the Solid Waste Management Workers and assisting them in maintaining a healthy work environment to protect them and the entire community. The JICA will work with various stakeholders and partners to overcome the pandemic and its various negative effects.
