The Kandy District Sports Development Foundation (KDSDF), formed by former Cabinet Minister, General Anuruddha Ratwatte for the development of sports in the Kandy District and to assist the under-privileged sportsmen in the area is at a standstill since the demise of the President of KDSDF. The foundation had a proper Constitution and accordingly, the President should be a Cabinet Minister and the Vice-President should be a Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Secretary will be the Defence Secretary and the Treasurer will be the District Secretary of the area and the other posts were filled by a voting system.

Mostly the funds for the foundation were raised by well-wishers as well as the members of the foundation.

Although the Foundation is not functioning at present the sports fund with a tremendous sum is maintained by the present District Secretary of Kandy District, who becomes the Treasurer of the KDSDF automatically. The funds of this sports foundation were really helpful to uplift sports activities in the Kandy area including the Bogambara Stadium, which was renovated by the foundation at several instances.

Not only the Bogambara Stadium but 13 other playgrounds maintained by the Kandy MC in all other areas were also renovated and all facilities were supplied by spending millions from the foundation.

In addition, the foundation selected specialised coaches for each sport and they were given sponsorships to organise various tournaments.
