Colmbo YMBA seeks Indian HC’s support to procure 600,000 Astrazeneca vaccines

The Colombo Young Men’s Buddhist Association (YMBA) requests Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay to urge the Indian Government to procure 600,000 quota of Oxford Astrazeneca Covishield vaccines to be used as the second dose to those who got the first dose.

The first dose of the Indian made vaccine was given to 600,000 people in the country but they are rendered helpless since it is not possible for them to obtain the second dose which is necessary for the vaccine to be given to them before the prescribed date.

The YMBA in letter thanking the Government of India for the generous gesture of sending a quota of Oxford Astrazeneca Covishield vaccineS to the people of Sri Lanka, states while the whole world is fighting to control the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in Sri Lanka is alarming.

Mahinda Thera in Sri Lanka and the religious and cultural bonds based on Buddhism have greatly strengthened bilateral friendship.

The YMBA while expressing its gratitude to India for providing the Oxford Astrazeneca Covishield vaccine made in India to the needy citizens of our country, states that around 600,000 people who got the first dose of the vaccine are rendered helpless since it is not possible for them to obtain the second dose’.

It is vital that the vaccine be given to them before the prescribed date.

The YMBA in its letter further states that, “under these circumstances, considering the dire need of our people who got the first vaccine, humbly requests the High Commissioner of India to request the Government of India to consider providing Sri Lanka another quota of the vaccine enabling us to cover the said requirement of around 6oo,ooo vaccines”.
