Ministry to take legal action against LP Gas cylinder changes - Minister

The Trade Ministry will bear the responsibility of taking legal measures against any discrepancies in the regular 18 Litre gas cylinders issued to the market recently, Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.

“If any public or private entity has violated the Act on consumer affairs, I will take the responsibility of taking legal action against such an entity,” Dr. Gunawardena noted.

MP Kabir Hashim who said that the SJB is to seek legal action against the said matter. MP Hashim said the Consumer Affairs Authority has already informed about the issues regarding this gas cylinder to the President. Hashim alleged that the subject ministers have not yet responded to this matter in any way. MP Hashim also pointed out that the Consumer Affairs Authority has not given its approval on releasing this gas cylinder to the market, hence, action should be considered illegal as per the relevant Act.

Dr.Gunawardena pointed out that the Consumer Affairs Authority has already sought legal advice regarding the matter.

MP Hashim also questioned the Minister whether Litro Gas Lanka Limited and Laughs Gas company were to merge. MP Hashim pointed out that the latter is presently Rs. 23 billion in debt and only shares a small market. MP Hashim also questioned if Litro Gas Lanka Limited has not properly submitted reports and relevant documents to the COPE.

Minister Gunawardena said the Cabinet appointed a subcommittee to look into the said proposal and give recommendations on combining the said two entities. A decision shall be made following the subcommittee observations and recommendations.

COPE Chairman Dr. Charitha Herath stated that there have been several issues regarding obtain reports from Litro Gas Lanka Limited and the Committee has sought legal advice on the matter from the Attorney General’s Department.
