Proper mechanism vital to distribute vegetable stocks – ACFF

Farmer communities in vegetable producing areas face immense hardships since no proper mechanism has so far been introduced by authorities to distribute vegetable stocks being brought to economic centres. Therefore, steps should be taken immediately to have a proper distribution method, All Ceylon farmer Federation (ACFF) National Organiser Namal Karunaratna said.

He said that introducing a proper vegetable distribution method will benefit both farmer communities and consumers, especially during the pandemic situation when a majority of them buy goods such as vegetable, fruit and fish online to maintain health guidelines.

Karunaratna said that authorities should intervene into this matter immediately by visiting the vegetable producing areas including Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota and mainly economic centres including Dambulla, Tambuththegama, Peliyagoda, Narahenpita regularly, so that they could inspect the situation clearly.

“Even in several agricultural areas in Dambulla , farmers have neglected their activities since there is no proper way to sell their vegetable harvest and ultimately, the rotten vegetables and fruits are thrown away for wild elephants and cattle,” he said.

He said that the authorities should introduce a mechanism with the help of authorities and employees at Divisional Secretariats, Agriculture Department, Agrarian Service Department and the Trade and Commerce Ministry to use a few train services to transport goods from Trincomalee, Chilaw, Matara, Jaffna, Bandarawela and many other destinations to make a speedy vegetable, fish and fruit distribution service all over the country.

Karunaratna thanked the President and the Government for making a decision recently to distribute vegetable through countrywide Divisional Secretariats using public and private transport, but he said that this important decision did not work out properly due to the negligence of authorities.

He said that if such a proper vegetable and goods distribution mechanism is followed by the authorities even now, it will highly benefit both farmer communities and consumers, especially during this pandemic where the Government has no any option other than extending travel restrictions .
